Healthy Foods Avoid Aspartame

Today we’re going to have a little chat about how healthy foods avoid Aspartame.

We have been conditioned over the years to choose “diet” food off the supermarket shelves, but its not helped us.

  1. The general population is getting fatter
  2. “diet” food contains ingredients that do far more harm than what they are replacing.

Not good.

They’ve taken the sugar out and replaced it with aspartame… something that over 20 research studies found that aspartame causes many sicknesses and diseases, including: cancer, heart conditions, birth defects etc.  Within your body, aspartame causes a domino effect of creating one toxin and then another… and these toxins are deadly.  See what this video has to say on the hidden dangers of aspartame:

I made the decision to check the ingredients on every product I buy.  You have to do it carefully and not only take notice of the big printing on the front of the product.  Not everything you buy in packets is bad, as some would have you think, but checking all the words printed on it is something we must do if we are working on our health.

You know, if we all made the decision that we wouldn’t ever buy “diet” foods or “sugar-free” foods, the manufacturers would change their ways.  Wouldn’t that be something else!  The problem is that everyone is so brainwashed that they believe they are doing the right thing by buying “diet”.  So sad.

Now don’t go thinking it’s just aspartame that’s the culprit because there’s other villains out there too. Just be aware of all the artificial sweeteners: sucralose (Splenda), saccharin etc.

When I became aware that…

  • all “diet” foods and drinks are chemically processed;
  • they contain super refined ingredients;
  • they are full of artificial colours and flavours;
  • and a heap of table salt to boot

…I decided to walk right on by.   For awhile, I avoided those aisles in the supermarket altogether until it was just so easy… I didn’t need them anymore.

There are so many wonderful foods given us to eat, why would we want to fill ourselves with all this stuff?  So when I’m choosing a product to buy, I carefully read the label and move to the one that’s the closest to natural I can find.

Did you know that many of the ingredients in “diet” food are placed there because the manufacturers knows they’re addictive?  Why would they do that?  Money of-course!  The bottom line is they want you to come back again and again to buy their wares… they have little care whatsoever whether it’s doing you good or not.avoid aspartame eat healthy foods

If a food is genuinely healthy for you it definitely will not contain aspartame or any other known substance that potentially gives you health problems.  In actual fact, we should not just think “Oh well, what can I do about it?” and continue buying these foods.

I read somewhere ‘Don’t drink or eat anything with “die” on it’.  I thought it was really good and haven’t forgotten it.  It’s a good clue to follow.

  1. Soft Drinks
  2. Diet Sodas
  3. Gum and Candies
  4. Yogurt
  5. Desserts
  6. Condiments
  7. Meal Replacements

Healthy Foods That Don’t Contain Aspartame

I’m tempted to write “everything else”!  Well, pretty much.  Does it mean that all candies, yogurt, desserts, condiments etc contain aspartame?  No.  Usually they are advertised as diet, low-sugar or sugar-free.  Just be warned that if they are using High Fructose Corn Syrup you are no better off!

Read the labels on any condiment you may buy,  or make your own.  Same with yogurt.

Other than that, of-course all whole food such as fruit, vegetables, meat etc are naturally free providing you buy organic or grass-fed.  Oh dear, what’s happened to the “good ol’ days” when meat was meat and nothing else; veges were veges and nothing else… etc!

Healthy foods avoid aspartame as a matter of course and wouldn’t consider adding a potential poison to the food.  Duh!  We need eyes in the back of our heads these days though so as not to be fooled into thinking something bad is something good.  What foods have caught you out and fooled you into thinking what you’re consuming is building your health?  I bet you have a story or two… why not share with us?

    • I understand your thinking Dan and it’s certainly the way you’d think it would naturally be… but unfortunately it’s not. I think the best thing you could do is a little research for yourself. It won’t take you long to find out that things aren’t always as we think they are.

  10. I’ve been using aspartame for years and it was only a month or so ago I learned it was not good for me. I had always thought it was a much healthier option for me. I feel ripped off actually…why do they do this to us?

    • Hi Bob! I wish I could answer that for you… it is appalling to me also. We follow what the “experts” tell us only to learn down the track it’s not the way they said it would be. The “experts” are generally manufacturers who advertise their product in such a way that you believe it will build your health. They are only interested in their profits, not your health. You need to learn from people who really do know… from doctors and health professionals who are studied in true health, I don’t mean the “sickness industry”. Marilyn

    • Hi Edith, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It makes me wonder if you have ever tried to find out if aspartame is healthy for you? Each to our own of-course, so if you are happy to consume it then that’s fine. As for me, I’ll always try to avoid it and any other artificial sweetener.

    • Hi Pam! I don’t believe any of the artificial sugars are ok… no matter what they call it. The best thing to do is to keep as close to nature as you possible can and then you can’t go wrong.

  16. Hello, thanks for spreading a message about dangers of aspartame. Regarding some naturopathic doctors, aspartame is most dangerous substance.
    I agree with them, because it is an artificial sweetener.
    These substances make health miserable, because diseases such as stroke, heart problems, Alzheimer occur when people use these sweeteners.
    Allergies are common problems for people who like to use drink soda.
    There are more bad things about aspartame, but I think why we can not urn to organic things such as Stevia or honey?
    It would be better for our health and wallet, because if we are healthy, we do not need buy drugs.

    • They don’t only use aspartame but none of the artificial sweeteners are any good for you. You do need to steer clear from them. I would encourage you also to keep going down the track you’ve begun as it can only lead one direction and that’s towards better health.

    I like that trick: Don’t consume anything with ‘die’ on it.
    The majority of people really believe that they have to live off diet things with these horrible sugar substitutes simply because they do not know the consequences. I doubt it’s because they don’t care.
    The word aspartame just scares me. I check every label as well for things to avoid. Unfortunately I can never see it happening that manufacturers will change their ways since most people will continue to buy these chemicals. 🙁

    • Hi Gina… well as each one of us begin to do what you do… check labels for the nasties, that’s one more hurt to that manufacturer’s hip pocket… hooray! We just cant give up and gradually more and more will join us!

    Hey Marilyn, me and my twin brother just started a diet for our 90 day transformation with p90x3. Reading your Web page really got me hooked, so hooked that I went and read the ingredients in my lunch and highlighted the bad ingredients. After work iv decided to go to Kroger and refine my diet plan to help detox my self. This information really helps, I’m glad there is other people out there that actually research h these kind of things. Other than the information, I love the way you have your page laid out and in order, amazing work Marilyn!!

    • Hi Konnor. I must admit that I had not heard of p90x3 – had to look it up online. I’m not about to talk about someone else’s program but I am glad you felt to read the ingredients list. This is where we all have to start… and be very conscious of the numbers etc. They hide so much behind words they know we don’t understand, or numbers we need to run and look up somewhere and usually can’t.

    Great job on pulling back the curtain on yet another poison that we are inundated with every day!! It is my quest to raise this kind of awareness as well. I’m sure you’re aware that this is just one of thousands of toxins we are exposed to every day.     • Hey Rick! It’s good to meet someone else with the same type of passion! You are welcome to the soapbox and I’ll definitely look into those books. It’s almost frightening what they’re doing to the food supply… it’s more than crazy. I feel the best way is to grow your own, but even then you have to make sure you add the necessary minerals as they are not always in the soil. What’s happened to the “good ol’ days” when things were more the way they should be?

Public awareness should be created to let more people understand about the health hazard possibly cause by food additives. We should opt for more natural foods from now on.     • That’s great Saber! Yes, I agree with you that we do need to get the information out there. Food additives are everywhere and in just about everything… hardly matters what I pick up, there they are again.

      This is why it’s smart to eat whole foods where they can’t adulterate it. Well, having said that, an enormous amount of our whole foods are adulterated with sprays and heaven only knows what else!!! So going organic is good, but it’s not the whole story neither. To full meaning of organic is that they have prepared the soil well with all the plant needs AND not sprayed with dangerous sprays. Many of them only do the 2nd part rather than add all the good into the soil. I think there should be another name for fruit and vegetables that have both parts of the equation so we can differentiate between the two.

    I am quite obsessive about the whole sugar deal ever since I’ve started researching this stuff. You need to watch a video on Youtube by Dr Robert Lustig called “Sugar The Bitter Truth”. He goes into serious depth about the dangers about corn fructose syrup.

    Back to the aspartame, I’ve read that this is in fact what was once known as Nutrasweet. But they discovered that is caused cancer, so they took it off the market, waited a little while, then renamed it aspartame.

    It also has links to Monsanto, which says it all really.

    • Hi Jay, so good to hear from you again! You are right onto it and your research is revealing quite a thing or two, isn’t it? The problem is that most people don’t spend the time to research what is really behind a product. If they did I’m sure they would be more choosey in what they buy.

      I did look up Dr Lustig and have bookmarked him to watch later. It appears that most of his videos are quite lengthy. I will enjoy it when I do, I’m sure.

      As I tend to always say, our health depends on us making our own careful choices because there is no-one else out there looking out for us. Most of the companies and even the government departments are only concerned with how much money there is in there for them… one way and another. Short cuts or using devious means are acceptable if the end result is better for them.

      HFCS is another we really need to avoid at all costs. but it’s everywhere. Can’t afford to drink or eat anything with label reading. In most cases it’s better to eat real food where there are no labels.

  28. Since I read some time ago that Aspartame could cause many different kinds of diseases, including cancer, I have tried to avoid as much as I can any food that may contain this substance. I was shocked after reading about the toxic domino effect Aspartame can have in our body! This was something new to me. It is a relief to know that there are healthy foods that don`t contain this toxic substance. Great article!

    • It’s so good to read that you are doing all you can to avoid aspartame… good for you! You know, they will stop using it if we all do exactly what you are doing as they wouldn’t have a market for it anymore. The trouble is of-course, to get people to do just that. Oh well, with each new person side-stepping it, you never know!

  29. Great article! Most people thought long ago that by replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners that it would be better for you… wrong. Aspartame especially, is one of the worst artificial sweeteners that you can possibly ingest. Also, people who put artificial sweeteners in sweet teas feel like it’s better for them. Do you know if there’s a link between aspartame and diabetes?

    • Thanks for that Jeremy! Well once again it depends on who you are prepared to listen to regarding the safety of aspartame. If you visit certain diabetes websites they insist it’s completely safe for diabetic people.

      On the other hand, go to someone like Dr mercola for example, and he has quite a list of side affects of aspartame in diabetic people! http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/hidden_dangers.htm

  30. Ive really been focusing on my diet lately and doing alot of reading. The omnivores dilema and wheat belly are two good books ive read on diet that have really opened my eyes. I had no idea about aspaatame. It sucks really to think that all we need as humans is a simple diet of fat, and vegetable nutrition and some carbs yet we are constantly haunted by new chemicals and things that our present in modern food. Its like the manufacturers have taken the term “dont fix whats not broken” to a massive massive extreme. Ill keep an eye out for this. Thank you!

    • You are so right Chris! I love the term you’ve used “don’t fix whats not broken” – that’s perfect! To focus on a good and correct diet you just need to keep it simple. Of-course this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a few cakes, bread and desserts along the way… they just all need to be made out of different ingredients like nut flours instead of wheat flours etc.

  31. I’ve avoided aspartame for years because I get an instant headache when I have something it’s in. I wish that some of these artificial ingredients were disappearing more quickly. It seems many companies are starting to follow that trend, however slowly. Do you have any information on Stevia? I’ve tried cooking with it and haven’t heard bad things about it, but it’s hard when we’re so accustomed to the taste of regular sugar.

    • Hi Sarah… thanks for taking the time to comment on my site. It’s good you understand not to use aspartame even if it was the headaches that taught you not too.

      It’s worth shopping around a bit for a good tasting stevia. The first one I tried was not that pleasant but the second one was amazing. I went back to buy more and they didn’t have it… so sad. The third one I bought was ho-hum and then I bought the SweetLeaf drops which are pretty good in my estimation.

      I’m planning to write a post about stevia so I’ll try to address your questions there. Stay tuned! 🙂

    In a bid to loose weight I have been using sweeteners in my coffee and tea. Omg I did not realise the dangers of aspartame. I have been using canderel’ and have had some of the symptoms you have mentioned but never even considered they could be attributed to the sweeteners. Please could you recommend an alternative sweetener?

    • Oh Tim… it’s a shock isn’t it!? With the clever and crafty marketing used, I mean, what can we trust?

      Stevia is one of the best but they don’t all taste wonderful. You can get it in drops and it only takes one drop to sweeten a cup of whatever.

      I like also to use just a little coconut sugar as it’s so tasty… a lot of health professionals believe it to be a very good choice, but they don’t all agree. (As usual)

      The very best thing you can do is to gradually wean yourself off sugar. A time comes when sugary things begin to taste incredibly sweet… too sweet. Stevia is great because it doesn’t add any weight or given any health challenges.
